MARCH 14, 2021 - PETITCODIAC - CENTERFIRE BENCHREST MATCH - RESULTS

THE FIRST SHOOT OF 2021 !

Thanks to the precautions around the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been unable to get together in groups for the past few months. This has prevented us from starting our normal shooting schedule until now. So here we are today, very glad to be able to travel outside our own region and very glad to be able to get together to do some chin-wagging and shooting.

As the scores show, we were a bunch of rusty shooters with gear that needed checking and tuning. There were the "stuck case so you had to rap the bolt" issues as well as a scope that seemed to jump a couple of MOA in elevation without apparent reason. There were the usual rusty shooter "yank on the trigger" issues. Also the old eyes that could not adjust too well to the mirage and bright glare of the sun - hard to focus on the flags with the snow so bright white. We seem to have lost some muscle memory from not having shot since last November and had even forgotten some parts of our normal routine.

But there were also, and no score can indicate these, big grins of accomplishment and sheer joy when things went right and we poked a hole right there in the middle where we were aiming - several times in a row!

By the way, the sun was very bright today with no cloud cover. This produced mirage on the target face which made it almost impossible to see the outline of the 10 ring at times. The wind was pretty wild with 20+km/hr winds from 6:00 o'clock but switching from 3:00 to 9:00 o'clock. The temperature was hovering around the 0C mark most of the day and with the wind-chill it was quite uncomfortable at times - hard to feel a trigger with frozen stubby fingers.
