SEPTEMBER 21, 2025 - PETITCODIAC - CENTERFIRE BR CHAMPIONSHIP and RNBRA CENTERFIRE BR CHAMPIONSHIP

The annual final centerfire, (Annual Centerfire Benchrest Championship) shoot of the Petitcodiac Sportsmen's Club was held this Sunday, in conjunction with the Annual Provincial Centerfire Benchrest Championship of the Royal New Brunswick Rifle Assn.
Shooters were competing for the club awards as well as the provincial awards. The only difference between the two was that the provincial shoot included both the "Open" and "Sporter" classes, while the club championship was for "Open" class only.

Thirteen shooters took part in both classes of shooting on a day that was blessed with warm sunshine and mild conditions. The temperature on the way down to Petitcodiac was about 5C and by the end of the shooting was about 20C. The sun did produce some glare from the targets but the wind dispersed the mirage that could have been a serious handicap.

The wind was switching with lots of quiet periods when very little movement could be seen from the windflags on the range. On the whole, winds did not exceed 15km/hr. As usual for Petitcodiac, the wind flags did not agree most of the time and shooters were forced to select the most predictive flags and wait for their favoured condition to return. The conditions, although mild, were challenging as can be seen by the low scores and low X count in the "Sporter" class. Nevertheless, Dan G. shot a very good score of 149/3X.

In the "Open" class, competition was fierce and the match was not decided until the last shot was fired. Some very good scores were recorded with Malcolm McA., Cecil H., John McC. and Bert deV. shooting a clean match. Note also John's 100/10X target sheet in the first relay. Congrats guys!

Many people worked hard for this championship to be a success with a special thanks going to Dan G., Volker T. and Chris S.

SEPTEMBER 14, 2025 - MINTO - RIMFIRE OPEN/SPORTER - RESULTS

Many thanks to Dale H. for sending these results.

Eighteen keen shooters, coming from as far afield as Miramichi to Saint John, enjoyed a very fine day shooting the rimfire benchrest match at the Minto Ranges. Not only the shooting was a lot of fun, but also the opportunity for socialising. We caught up with the news and gossip and learned of the plans for the championship shoot in Petitcodiac next weekend.

It was a lovely fall day with the temperature starting at 5C in the morning when we drove to the range. It became quite warm at 24C at the end of the match. A bright sun was out all day. This created some sight picture problems for some shooters with glare and mirage coming from the white targets and backers.
RELAY #1
The wind changed during the day, starting as a mild left to right fairly steady wind to a bit stronger switching wind mostly from left to right. There were lots of quiet periods where the wind activating the flags was not easily visible as well as switching from all corners of the range.

SEPTEMBER 7, 2025 - PETITCODIAC - 22 RIMFIRE - 11th ANNUAL MARTIN F. TOPF RIMFIRE CHAMPIONSHIP

Fifteen shooters gathered today to participate in the annual Martin F. Topf memorial Championship 22 Benchrest Match.  A big "Hello" to new shooter Kevin C. for his first venture into our sport. We hope to see him again.
Temperatures stayed around 13C, but there was a continuous rain condition. Fortunately, we completed the match before the targets became too wet. They were wet enough for the scorer! Wind conditions were very mild and several 500 scores were shot. There were fifteen 250 targets shot which was quite good. And the X count was substantial too. A lot of other shooters just missed the clean target score even though they tried very hard. Some shooters believed we had an invisible wind condition prevailing. They may have been right - several shooters saw their shots miss the 10 ring quite unexpectedly.
Halfway through the match we all broke for lunch and had an opportunity to plan for better results in the second half.
Awards were given for the High Score and Single Target high score during the regular season. Both were won by Bruce B. Nice going!
Recognition and medals were also presented to the PSC 22 Team members for placing first in this year’s annual 22 Team Shoot. Members were Volker T., Chris S., Dan G.  Grant G., Becky McC., and John McC.  Becky and John were absent for the presentation and photo.
Hoping to see you all next year.

AUGUST 31, 2025 - MINTO - CENTERFIRE OPEN/SPORTER - RESULTS

This was the first shoot in Minto since the provincial government had closed shooting ranges located on crown land due to the wild fire hazard this summer.
It was a very nice day for a shoot at the Minto ranges although it started out a bit cool for August. It was 11C when we started out in the morning. Thankfully, the temperature gradually increased and by the end of the shooting it was about 23C.
The sun was pretty intense from time to time and the mirage followed suit. This gave some shooters significant problems and it certainly took a lot of concentration and focus to try to shoot accurately with the target wriggling around. A reduction in the magnification of the scopes did help a bit but there are limits to this tactic.
The wind was variable with dead quiet at times and a 10 to 15km/hr wind from left to right and vice versa at other times. A patient shooter's chosen conditions were sure to return.
All-in-all we had a good time and very much enjoyed the mincemeat tarts that David's sister had made for us - many thanks!
