JUNE 22, 2014 - PETITCODIAC 22BR SHOOT

Thanks to Volker T. for sending this report and to Darryl K. who sent the pictures.Well, it was another great day at Petitcodiac for hosting a 22BR shoot. The weather was a mix of sun and occasional overcast with temperatures in
the 15-20C range. There were 17 shooters who enjoyed the friendly camaraderie of the match - not to mention the great sweets provided by our usual contributors - Shelly C., Barb J. and Dan G. (It might be time to add a cooking/recipe section to this blog as the sweets are truly great. Of course, if we did that, we would also have to add excercise and diet sections!)
Along with their participation in the shoot, we were most thankful to all who helped with the sweeping of the shooting hut, and after the shoot all those who helped to relocate the shooting benches, the wood stove and other appurtenances in preparation for the pouring of the new concrete floor which is to be constructed this week. The Rifle Committee is most grateful for your help.

Today the Match Director and scorer was Volker T. while Dan G. and Darryl K. served as RSOs. Our Registrar and Statistician was John C. Dan G. and Shelly C. did the target changing. Volker T. prepared the club house and Darryl K. was the talented photographer. Thanks all - it makes a difference. We love having you attend.

With the mild wind, we expected to see a few 500 scores. The wind WAS mild but oh so deceitful! Although many tried their "durnest" but missed by a shot or two, the big congratulations go to Gerard D. who shot a perfect 500/17X. Way to go Gerard - you will enter the hallowed halls of the Petitcodiac 500 Club and your name will be added to the 500 Trophy.

Gerard D. - our newest addition to 500 Club.

JUNE 15, 2014 - MINTO 22BR SHOOT

We celebrated Father's Day at the Minto Range with a great 22BR shoot.

It was a great day with a nice group of shooters and new targets. It was very cloudy and windy which was a challenge for most shooters. On the plus side, the rain held off and the wind blew mosquitos and black flies back into the woods.

Everyone helped out in some way - Terry McN. and Barb J. were the RSOs; Dave C. and Wayne were the score keepers while George M., Barb J. and Tom W. changed the targets. Terry McN. boiled the kettle for coffee and Barb J. brought her famous treats. Cecil H. swept the sand off the floor and steps and George M. did some housekeeping around the benches.

JUNE 8, 2014 - CENTERFIRE SHOOT - PETITCODIAC

Thanks to Volker T. for sending this write up and results and to Darryl K. for sending the pictures.

We had great weather for today's shoot and 16 shooters from all over southeren New Brunswick attended - coming from as far away as Fredericton and Oromocto in the north to Grand Manan in the south. And of course shooters from Sussex and the Moncton area were there in force. It was good to see Ron M. who was home from work in Alberta.
Today, temperatures ranged from 17C in the morning, up to 23C in the afternoon. It was sunny all day and you couldn't ask for a better day to be shooting with friends. The wind was there to challenge the shooters - gusting from 10km/hr to 20km/hr. It took effect when we least wanted it - and there was a touch of mirage just to make things interesting. We didn't shoot any 300s - not that we didn't try our "darnest" - but we had some close scores and were happy with that for now.

Bert deV.'s 30BR was absent but Don M. had brought his. He shot very well indeed and tied for third. The tie breaker went to the shooter with the highest first target shot - and this turned out to be Matt A. - congrats! Ron M. was there with his 308 just to make sure we wouldn't miss Bert's boomer 30BR. What fun we have!!
Lots of folks did their share (and more) to make this shoot enjoyable. Darryl K. took the great pictures. Tony L., Tom N., Shelly C. and Dan G. hoofed it back and forth to set up and change targets. Dan G. and Darryl K., who have the patience of a saint, were the RSOs. Sticky fingers John C. did the registering and accounting. John McC's wife sent her delicious muffins while Shelly C. brought her wonderful treats and Dan G. the traditional Timbits - at the end of the match we all had sticky fingers. We musn't forget our humble Match Director and scorer, Volker T. who promises to be ready next time with fireformed 6BRX ammo (he hopes)!

Until next time, Cheers fellow shooters.

RCMP SHOOTING TRAGEDY IN MONCTON

As Benchrest and Target Shooters, and as just plain people who live in New Brunswick and around Moncton, we wish  to express our sincere condolences to the families of the slain and wounded RCMP officers in Moncton NB. Our deepest condolences also go to the RCMP and indeed to the people of New Brunswick for this loss.

The RCMP officers who were gunned down, as are all law enforcement officers, are the mainstay of a safe, law abiding society and their deaths are felt deeply by us all.

It is our hope that the perpetrator of this act is apprehended speedily and without further harm to anyone - police and the general public alike.

We, who very much enjoy the sporting use of firearms, support the legal and legitimate use of firearms for these sporting activities. At the same time, we strongly condemn the use of firearms for any criminal and illegal purposes.

MAY 25, 2014 - PETITCODIAC - 22BR SHOOT

Today we had 18 shooters brave the cool temperatures (can you believe it - it's the end of May and the temperature could only squeeze out a measly 9 degrees C - even the blackflies are shivering in their booties). As the day wore on however, it did get a bit warmer and the rain did not materialize - so we have something to be thankful for! The WIND was the story as is so often the case in Petitcodiac (come to think about it, that's true of  Minto as well!). The wind ran pretty much constantly at 20km/hr, gusting to 30km/hr on and off. We hung on to our proverbial hats not to mention the rest of our gear and of course, this made for some tricky shooting conditions. Maybe next time we will have sunny quiet periods (we wish!!).
The match ran quickly, thanks to the usual and much appreciated help from many people. Thanks to Brian P., Dan G., Shelly C., Darryl K., and Tony L. for taking the responsibility of  target setting and changing, Rang Safety Officering, and doing Clubhouse chores including the wonderful warmth of the wood stove - it gets darn cold in New Brunswick in May by golly!
A big thanks to Barb J., Dan G. and Shelly C. for the great sweets. That extra sugar helped to sweetened up the bitter taste of some of the shots fired and the sour note of the resulting scores. . . . and helped us stay warm.
A very strange thing is happening here in Petitcodiac - maybe under the cover of the night. As you can see from the picture of the rifle rack, 75% of the rifles used were Anschutz. This is a huge increase over years past and we can only conclude that they are reproducing when we aren't looking.
Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all who participated. We had fun getting together to do what we love best and maybe learned a thing or two about shooting in the wind. Until next time, on the range..... sent by Volker T.

MAY 11, 2014 - PETITCODIAC CENTER FIRE SHOOT

Today was a beautiful day to be at Petitcodiac for a shoot. The wind was light but shifted around quite a bit - if you waited for your conditions to return you sometimes waited for quite a while. Not that this did much good as most of us were attacked by the "yips" and produced a number of flyers. It was 13C today and the sun was out for most of the shoot. Spring is here and we felt lucky to be able to spend a day shooting together.

Thanks are due to a good number of people who  made the shoot possible. Volker was the Match Director and scorer. Dan G. was the RSO while John C. collected fees and produced the stats. The targets were changed by Dan G., Brian P. andTony L. The sweets were brought by Dan G. and Tony L. brought Shelley's famous squares as she couldn't be here. Volker was the camera man when he wasn't pumping the winner's hands.

RESULTS:

27-04-2014 - PETITCODIAC - 22 BR SHOOT

Thanks to Volker T. for sending these match results and writeup and also to Darryl K. for sending the pictures.            The day started with overcast and +3C weather and as the day progressed it did not warm up at all but instead a steady drizzling rain commenced. This made for miserable shooting that did not lend itself to scoring the elusive 500 score and on top of that, wet targets that had to be dried out by the wood stove - the drying crew consisted of George M., Martin T., Darryl K. and Volker T. The targets were peeled off from the backers by another crew consisting of Tom N., Dan G., John McC. and Volker T. Thanks to all these guys and also to Tony L. and George for firing up the stoves at both facilities.

The miserable weather was accompanied by typical Petitcodiac winds - constant for the most part at about 15km/h with gusts to about 30km/h. It would stop briefly but only to take a different tack and at those times it would catch some shooters. Occasionally a few words (!) of disappointment would be heard from the firing line among the shooters who were so sorely tried by these conditions. W are hoping the weather will improve for he next match.

Dan G. did a great job as Match Director and scorer not easy when the targets - and bullet holes had been wet. The Range Safety Officers were Dan G. and Darryl K. With the sweets courtesy of  Dan G. and Shelly C., a warm clubhouse and a warm spot next to the stove at the range, we made it through the match with smiles on our faces. Many thanks to all for their help.

Several shooters tried out their new Anschutz rifles during the match - Don M. and George M. - very nice gear guys! Below is a picture of a very special and noteworthy milestone - Martin is holding up an autographed copy of an Anschutz History that was given to him recently by Dieter and Jochen Anschutz along with a covering letter from them. It turns out that Brad Mills of Nordic Marksman in Truro had mentioned Martin's long and ongoing shooting successes with Anschutz firearms to them, which prompted them to send this fine gift to Martin. Well deserved!

APRIL 13, 2014 - CENTERFIRE BR SHOOT- PETITCODIAC

After several days of spring-like weather today started with temperatures near or below 0 and a forecast of snow and rain for later in the day. It turned out much better than that with temperatures closer to 6C, the occasional sunny period and very light winds. As is usual in Petitcodiac, the wind was tricky with flags closest to the building pointing one way while flags downrange were pointing in the opposite direction. Waiting for the same conditions did not always work as some of the unfavourable conditions persisted for quite a long time.
The drive down to the range was pleasant with a lot of sun which warmed up the car nicely for us old fellows - even if some found it too hot! There were many many deer along the side of the highway - it was good to see so many had survived the winter in this part of the province. Sadly, on the way home we saw 3 or 4 which had been struck by vehicles and were lying by the side of the road. We also saw many ducks that had returned to our area. Most were standing on the ice as there was relatively little open water as yet.

This shoot was attended by 14 shooters - the number a bit low for a fine day in New Brunswick. This may have been due to a conflicting 22 BR shoot in Minto. At any rate, we had a lot of fun and even shot not too badly. Truth be told - we were prodded on to do well by the younger shooters among us. It was also good to see Claude and Darryl who dropped by before the shoot.

Thanks are due to Volker T. who was the Match Director and to Dan G. who did the scoring. The target stands were assembled by Shelly C., Cecil H. and Dan G. Targets were changed by Brian P., Volker T and Bert deV. The RSO duties were done by Bert deV., Terry McN., Volker T. and Brian P. Both Shelley C and Dan G. brought the necessary treats. Thanks to all.

RESULTS:
Cecil H. - 299/9X
