The pictures in this post were sent by Barbara J. and the scores were sent by Gerry J. Many thanks to both. These shooters are hardy souls - the temperature in my back yard this morning was -24C. I'm sure it warmed up some as the shoot progressed but the wind in Minto would also have picked up. It looks like everyone had fun today though - and there was a warm stove to come to after each relay.

It is good to see Sandy shooting again - he and Darryl came all the way from Moncton to attend this shoot. Others attended from Minto, Fredericton, Sussex, Mazerolle Settlement and Maugerville.

FEBRUARY 8, 2014 - LAKE GEORGE - 22BR SHOOT

Thanks to Terry McN. for sending this report on the second shoot in Lake George. We had a good turnout for the shoot with 10 shooters from the local area and from as far away as Minto braving the cold weather. It was -20C when we started. The temperature came up as the sun got higher which was nice temperature-wise - the only problem with that was that the wind also came up with gusts I'm sure of 25 kmh or more. This made it a challenge for the 8 Open class and 3 Sporter Class shooters - a challenge for some and a mere breeze for others.

The hot dogs and Barbara J's famous cookies were a big hit. Many thanks to all who made this shoot possible and enjoyable. We hope to see everybody out for the last shoot which is in March. There will be awards presented for the top 2 shooters overall in the 3 match series in both classes.

FEBRUARY 2, 2014 - PETITCODIAC - 22BR SHOOT

After 2 inches of snowfall ended, and with a hint of rain, the day was not at all bad - weather-wise. The temperature climbed to around 2 degrees and the wind was very light. Several shooters, however, were convinced that there were some mysterious hidden swirls of wind activity causing some erratic behaviour with some of their shots. I'm not sure if this was the case, but this writer had several fine shots that ended up in totally different places than planned!

It was a good shoot with 15 shooters trying their best and, as usual, having a heck of a good time. We welcomed a new shooter - John McClusky. It was also good to see Ron Mason who found some time from his busy commute to Alberta to make it to our shoot. We look forward to new - and old - participants and making new friends.

RESULTS OF POLL #2 - WHAT PEOPLE LIKE ON THE BLOG

January is gone with all of its cold weather. The sun is out longer and we can see the end of winter coming! Our shooting schedules are full of good shoots and our hearts with the anticipation of enjoying the company of good friends and of shooting as well as we can.

The most recent poll is is now finished and the results are in. As before, 16 viewers responded to the poll which is, again, kind of a small number. Here are the results:

People may want to search for something specific but don't remember where it is located.

On the other hand, links to Discussion pages and to Weather sites are not popular with a majority of those who responded. These will be eliminated from the Blog and the space freed up can be used for something else.

The next question is "What do you want to have on the Blog that is not there now?". There are three ways to let me know:

CONDOLENCES TO ROSS FAULKER

Our condolences go to Ross Faulker and his family on the passing away of his father. Most of us have had some dealings with Ross, his wife and Justin in our search for equipment and supplies. Ross has been a consistent supporter of shooting sports in New Brunswick.

JANUARY 26, 2014 - MINTO - CENTERFIRE BR SHOOT

Today the weather was cold and blustery - temperature of -6C but the wind made it a -15C windchill. At times there was a bit of snow.

Six hardy souls made it out to the shoot - 3 Open class shooters and 3 Sporter class. As you can see from the scores, the Sporter class shooters had a terrific day beating all Open class competitors. What a little wind will do eh?

JANUARY 19, 2014 - PETITCODIAC - CENTERFIRE BR SHOOT

Well, we got the new year started off well with our first Centerfire Benchrest Shoot. The weather co-operated with temperatures around +1C and very light winds at times with overcast skies. Such is the nature of a "January Thaw" in New Brunswick - the next day it was -20C in the back yard. But we were happy to enjoy this little gift for our shoot.

There were 17 shooters in all who participated. Most were from the Southern part of the province from Fredericton to Moncton and across to Sussex and Grand Manan. We had a few more young shooters on the line this time - great to see them shooting and enjoying themselves. We also had a family here today - Dan Gladstone, his son Logan and daughter Kaytelyn, AND GUESS WHAT, Kaytelyn shot really well and won the match (she is definitely hooked on BR shooting) while father Dan placed third. Bert deVink took the silver. Good shooting guys!!

NOTICE OF LAKE GEORGE 22BR SHOOTS

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING FROM SHELLEY GREGAN:

Happy New Year!  I appologize that this is being sent out to the 2013 e-mail list.  I have not had a chance to finalize the 2014 e-mail list yet but wanted to make sure that members were aware of these shoots.  There will be informal 22 shoots taking place January 11,  February 8 and March 8, 2014.  The following competition regulations have been provided by Terry McNeill who is coordinating these shoots - tfmcneill@live.ca

L.G.G.C. 22 RIMFIRE WINTER BENCHREST RULES

Dates: January 11,  February 8 and March 8, 2014

Registration is from 9 am until 10 am.  The shoot will start at 10 am.  The fee is $10.00.  Coffee and light lunch is included.  There wil be two classes - OPEN and SPORTER. Medals will be awarded for 1st and 2nd in each class.

OPEN CLASS:
Any rifle, any sights, any ammunition and any two piece rest with not more than 4" of contact on the rifle from either bag.  The rifle cannot be clamped rigid and must be free to float.

SPORTER CLASS:
Restricted to low and mid priced rifles with any action.  No target rifles or any rifles with modifications (including no heavy barrels).  The cut-off price will be around the CZ bolt action and the Marlin lever action.  If there is a dispute the committee will have the final say.

Sporter Class Sights: will be any sights (open, peep, scopes no larger than 9x but no high power scopes turned down)
Sporter Class Barrels: no heavy barrels, barrels can only measure a max of .65" with no modifications such as tunners.
Sporter Class Ammunition: Any ammunition permitted.
Sporter Class Rest: rests will be one sand bag under the front of the rifle.  No rear supports allowed other than the shooter's hand.

TARGETS:
There will be four targets with 10 shots for score on each.  This will result in a score out of 100 on each and a total of 400 for the match.  There will be unlimited sighters with a 10 minute time limit on each target.

OTHER REGULATIONS:

JANUARY 5, 2014 - PETITCODIAC - 22BR SHOOT

The Benchrest shooting season got off to a great start today with a 22BR shoot in Petitcodiac which was attended by 16 shooters from the Moncton, Fredericton, Sussex, and Minto areas. One even came from Grand Manan. This is a testament to the hardiness of New Brunswick shooters as, the day before, temperatures at the beginning of the day hovered around -30C. The weather was great today, however, with the sun shining and hardly any wind. We were lucky to see the temperature rise 8 degrees up to a balmy 0C and no snow. The warm stove was kept going to keep shooters thawed out between relays - and this venue was extremely well attended! Of course that's where the treats were also located. This was one of the best shoots ever with great scores. The top 4 shooters attained the ellusive perfect target with 500 scores. Congratulations to Matthew McAllister, Volker Topf, Brian Petitpas and Jeff Marshall, 3 of whom joined the 500 Club for the first time!

POLL #1: IS THIS SITE USEFUL FOR COMMUNICATION AMONG SHOOTERS?

Well here we are in 2014 - hope all of you had a good holiday season.
The time for voting on the question of whether you think the New Brunswick Benchrest Site is a useful communication tool is over. Thanks to those who took a few minutes to respond.

The Poll results are in:

Number of people voting = 16

"The site is very much a useful communication tool" = 15
"The site is somewhat useful as a communication tool" = 0
"The site is not all that much useful" = 1
"The site is not at all useful" = 0

So, 93% of those voting thought the blog-site was useful. Although this sounds good, keep in mind that in 2013 we had 60 shooters showing up to the shoots in Lake George, Minto and Petitcodiac. Assuming that all 16 voters in the poll were from New Brunswick, this means that only 1/4 of the active New Brunswick shooters in 2013 voted. We don't know why others did not vote or why 15 people thought it was useful.

In 2014 we will try a couple more polls. The plan is to find out what people like or dislike on the site and want to keep or discard. A second poll will try to find out what new items shooters would want to see on the website.
