The Minto Christmas shoot was a fun event with about 20 shooters taking part. The shoot was organized by match director Dave C. and consisted of 3 targets - a Racoon with seven small bulls; a Rat with seven small bulls and a Crow with seven small bulls. A shooter could choose to shoot a Rimfire .22 at 50 yards or a Centerfire rifle at 100 yards. As it turned out we had far more rimfire shooters. Prizes of a turkey went to first place shooters. Second place was awarded a ham while third place shooters received a box of chocolates. Many thanks to Dave C. for doing a great job of organizing this event.

The Scorekeeper was Matt McA. with Don M. verifying scores - not an easy task as the targets were printed on photocopy paper and the holes were elusive. Besides that, the targets came fast and furious. Thanks for doing a great job fellows. Thanks are due to others as well - the Targets were changed by Dave C., George M. and Bruce B. The RSOs for the shooting were Grant P. Sr. and Bert deV.

A highlight of the Christmas shoot was the food. Wayne K. made a wild meat stew that everyone dove into with delight. Bruce B. made a wonderful pot of chili - the bottom of the pot came far too quickly. Barbara J. made her famous banana bread to ward off the growls during the shoot and she made mincemeat pies for dessert - most of us had to have seconds! Terry McN. brought coffee, tea and soft drinks. Many thanks to all of you for a most appreciated meal.

After the shoot and the Christmas meal, prizes were awarded for the top 3 shooters of the day as mentioned above. A special award was given to Barbara J. for her gastronomic contributions to each shoot in 2014. In addition, the Annual Awards were presented to shooters who excelled during the normal shooting schedule for 2014. These are listed below:

LETTER FROM MICHAEL LUTES TO ALL GUN CLUBS, SHOOTING ASSOCIATIONS, and OTHER ORGANIZED GROUPS OF FIREARMS ENTHUSIASTS IN NEW BRUNSWICK

To all GUN CLUBS, SHOOTING ASSOCIATIONS, and OTHER ORGANIZED
GROUPS OF FIREARMS ENTHUSIASTS IN NEW BRUNSWICK

I am writing to you because the governing board believes that the RNBRA must establish a plan to support long term stability and sustainable growth in our provincial shooting community.

As the provincially recognized organization for shooting sports, the RNBRA wants to develop more programs and services for the organized groups of firearm enthusiasts that make up the majority of our provincial shooting community.

That is where you come in. I'm asking you to take this letter to your club executive for consideration. We must gather information and gauge interest from the clubs in order to develop programs that are relevant and supportive of club activities.

The RNBRA has been around since 1866, is democratically managed and will continue to promote shooting sports and marksmanship in New Brunswick (see www. RNBRA. ca).

Historically the Association has been run by people primarily involved with high performance competition but we recognize that many firearms enthusiasts and club members have little interest in national or international shooting competition and only desire recreational shooting activities in the company of other responsible like-minded people.

The RNBRA can be further developed into a stronger provincial Association that better represents all shooter interest and we welcome your participation. 

MY QUESTION:
Would your club send one or two reps to one of 2 meetings that the RNBRA is considering hosting in the Province?

The meetings would be for the purpose of discussion with the club reps about what the RNBRA could develop and what the RNBRA needs to make that happen. These meetings would likely be 2 to 4 hrs on a Sat or Sun early in the new year.

DECEMBER 6, 2014 - PETITCODIAC CHRISTMAS FUN SHOOT

Well it finally arrived - the Petitcodiac Sportsman's Club Annual Christmas Shoot and dinner. We had all looked forward to this event and 29 shooters attended to make this event a great one. 
The weather started out quite nice with about 2 degrees C as we left for the range. Unfortunately it gradually got colder during the day and we finished the shoot with -8C, a few snow flurries and pretty stiff winds which blew gustily downrange. The stove in the shooting building worked over-time today with Dan G. and Ron M. enthusiastically filling it at every opportunity.

Today's course of fire was a mixed bag - a lucky target which amounted to a blank sheet of paper. You could place your 5 shots anywhere on the paper - a tight little group or scattered around. It turned out that the winning statedgy used by John McC. (21 points) was a tight little group that he put on the paper in just the right spot which earned him a first place turkey.


The second target was a smaller version (about 1/2 size) of the Centerfire Hunter Class target. The trick here was to read the wind and many shooters did that very well indeed with 8 perfect targets of 100 points. The winner of this event was Brian P. with a very good bit of shooting and a score of 100/9X. There was a turkey for this performance as well.
The third target was the notorious "Fly target". Here a shooter had to place 10 shots on target - the target being the fly's head for 5 points, the thorax for 4 points and the abdomen for 3 points. A touching shot was 1 point while legs and wings did not earn any points. With the wind, a lot of legs and wings were hit but the winner of this event - Mike H. was able to rack up 36 points and will also eat turkey this Christmas.



Finally we shot the "Black Death" target. Here a shooter shot 5 shots at black squares with a white dot in the middle. A shot in the white dot of the large square was worth 1 point; in the next smaller square it was worth 2 points, the third size - 3 points, the fourth smaller target was worth 4 point and a shot in the final one - a small square with a small white dot was worth 5 points. A shooter could place his shots in any order in any square but to count it must be in the white. As soon as a shot touched the black, all shots in that square did not count. A few of us shot a grand total of 0 while the winner of this event - Terry McN., managed 14 points and went home with the plucked and frozen bird.

Halfway during the shoot, we all went to the clubhouse for a wonderful meal of ham and scalloped potatoes prepared by Mrs. T. and Mrs. K. Terry McN. had brought some great baked beans. The sweets for dessert were brought by Shelly C.and Mrs. McC. Needless to say we all went back to the shoot with full bellies and feeling like we had already won.

After the shoot, we all went to clubhouse for the awarding of the prizes. Those who did not win a turkey - about 25 of us - were eligible for a prize draw. We all went home with a Christmas gift provided for the shoot by John C. We were all winners today!

A lot of thanks go to the PSC and to Volker T. who did the scoring while Martin T. verified the scores. Dan G. and Barb J.. provided the treats during the shoot. Dan G., Darryl K., and Bert deV. were the range officers. Shelley C. and a crew of helpers changed the targets. 

THE BLOG SITE IS 2 YEARS OLD TODAY - THANKS TO ALL CONTRIBUTORS

December 1st marks the second anniversary of this Blog. 

It has been a busy year for Benchrest shooting in New Brunswick - at least in Minto, Petitcodiac and Lake George - with 28 Rimfire shoots, 19 Centerfire Shoots supplemented by Handgun Shoots in Minto and a good number of fun shoots. A total of 703 shooters attended these events for an average of 15 shooter per match. Of course, many attended more than one event, so if you remove duplications, this is a group of 50 individual shooters. It would be nice if all these would become members of this Blog - you could then have automatic e-mails of new posts sent to your Inbox and never miss an article.


Unfortunately, I could not attend many shoots this year, but had the able assistance of other shooters to send the results and fine pictures. In Minto, Gerry J. sent results and Barbara J. sent pictures of .22 matches. In Petitcodiac, Volker T. sent results and often wrote an article on the shoot, while Darryl K. sent many pictures. In Lake George, Terry McN. sent the results and Barbara J. sent the pictures. Many thanks to all of you for your help and support. Without your help, this Blog would not be very informative - and this is what we want - for the Blog to be a good communication tool for Benchrest Shooters in New Brunswick.

In the past two years, the Blog was visited 19,350 times with readers from 85 countries with the top fifteen as follows:

NOVEMBER 30, 2014 - MINTO - 2nd FINAL CENTERFIRE SHOOT - RESULTS

The 2nd Final Centerfire shoot was held in Minto today with 13 qualified shooters attending. It was a cold day with temperatures starting out in the morning at about -10C and warming up to a balmy 0. I'm sure the stove was kept glowing hot and that the shooters were thankful for the enclosed firing point.

It was a very tight race for 1st place in the Open Class among Dave C., Tom W. and Don M. with a shoot off eventually deciding the ranking. The scores for the first final shoot were added to the scores for the 2nd final shoot to determine the overall standings for the yearly trophy. Congratulations go to Dave C. who was the overall winner in Open Class and to Gerry J. who was the overall winner in Sporter Class.
